Johnny Gaudreau of the Columbus Blue Jackets Tragically Killed in NJ Crash Involving Suspected Drunk Driver
Blue Jackets Forward Johnny Gaudreau and His Brother Matthew Tragically Killed in NJ Crash
The Columbus Blue Jackets are mourning the loss of star forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew, who died in a tragic accident Thursday night. The brothers were biking in Oldmans Township, New Jersey, near their hometown of Salem County, when they were struck by a vehicle.
Johnny Gaudreau, 31, had joined the Blue Jackets in July 2022 as a prominent unrestricted free agent from the Calgary Flames. He was set to be a groomsman at his sister's wedding in Philadelphia the following day. Johnny, who had two young children with his wife Meredith, had embraced life in Columbus, where his family had settled.
Details of the Incident
According to New Jersey State Police, the Gaudreau brothers were killed after being hit by a vehicle driven by 43-year-old Sean Higgins, who is suspected of driving under the influence. Higgins, from Woodstown, New Jersey, was traveling north on a county road in a Jeep Grand Cherokee when he attempted to pass slower-moving vehicles. In the process, he crossed into the southbound lanes and collided with the Gaudreau brothers, who were biking on the right side of the road.
Higgins has been charged with two counts of death by auto and is currently being held at the Salem County Correctional Facility. The timing of his court appearance has not yet been announced.
Blue Jackets’ Statement
The Columbus Blue Jackets issued a heartfelt statement:
"The Columbus Blue Jackets are shocked and devastated by this unimaginable tragedy. Johnny was not only an exceptional hockey player but also a loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend. Our deepest sympathies go out to his wife, Meredith, his children Noa and Johnny, his parents, and all who knew and loved him. Johnny played with a joy and passion that touched everyone who saw him on the ice, from Boston College to the Calgary Flames, Team USA, and finally, the Blue Jackets.
His impact on our organization and the sport was profound, but it pales in comparison to the indelible mark he left on those who knew him. Johnny embraced our community from the moment he arrived, and Columbus welcomed him with open arms. We will miss him deeply and will do everything we can to support his family and each other during this time. We ask for prayers for the Gaudreau family and for respect of their privacy as they grieve."
Additional Context
Gaudreau’s death comes three years after another tragic loss for the Blue Jackets, with goalie Matiss Kivlenieks killed in a fireworks accident in 2021.
Despite two challenging seasons, Gaudreau was determined to rebound, showcasing his talent at the World Championships and leading the Blue Jackets in scoring last season. His decision to join the Blue Jackets in 2022 was driven by a desire to be closer to family in New Jersey and to contribute positively to the team’s fortunes.
The Blue Jackets are preparing for the upcoming season with new additions, including center Sean Monahan, aiming to honor Gaudreau's legacy and fulfill his commitment to the team and its fans.
